July 5. It is morning, about 6. I made an effort to get up before the others and having combed my hair and put on my sky-blue kimono, I am hurrying to write in my diary. Since the day I arrived here, I havenât been idle for a minute and it has really been impossible for me to write. But I knew you would be very glad to hear that I am undergoing a transformation: I have rosy cheeks and my whole face clearly shows the kind of thing I have been doing.
The walks that we have been taking together (generally Cuca, my [other] cousins Anaïs,1 Graziella,2 Eduardo, and I) last for hours and hours. Without worrying about spoiling our old clothes and old shoes, we have climbed a mountain, walked around Lake Placid, explored fields, little lakes and pine forests. Who can describe the joy of climbing a mountain! The excitement in the places that are dangerous, the pleasure of breathing the pure air fragrant with pines, the general merriment as each one tries to take the lead.
Yesterday in the evening we went to see a Venetian Festival on the big lake. All the boats were decorated with lanterns and several had flags, flowers and ribbons. In the dark, one could see only the lanterns reflected in the lake and the scene had an irresistible appeal. As it was the 4th of July, Independence Day, there were firecrackers and fireworks, which often took the form of many colored stars that opened to release a thousand sparks, like a shower of gold and silver.
A Club automobile brought us back to the house, and that ride also gave me pleasure. Itâs the only way to get home because the roads are so dark!
We take all our meals at the Club, at a big table, and we get a great deal of amusement from the grammar on the menu.
